Delphinium

Delphinium seeds for professional cultivation

Delphinium, belonging to the ranunculaceae family, has held a prominent position in the international cut flower sector and perennial production for generations. The majestic flower stems, densely set with single or double flowers, range in height from compact pot varieties to cut flower cultivars exceeding one hundred and fifty centimeters. Achieving a marketable and high-quality product in commercial cultivation requires top-tier starting material as an absolute prerequisite. The larkspur seeds from Muller Seeds are selected for high germination capacity, varietal purity, and genetic stability. As a grower, this ensures a predictable crop development and flowers of auction-grade quality.

Cultivation characteristics and classification of larkspur

Within the genus delphinium, we distinguish both annual species, such as delphinium consolida, and perennial types, including the well-known elatum and belladonna hybrids.

• Elatum hybrids produce long, sturdy flower spikes with very dense flower placement. They represent the industry standard for commercial cut flower production and offer an intense color palette from deep navy blue to pastel pink and pure white.
• Belladonna hybrids feature a more branched and airy growth habit. These types produce multiple slender stems per plant, making them particularly popular for field bouquets and naturalistic floral arrangements.
• Annual larkspurs grow rapidly and are ideal for efficient summer annual production in open fields or under glass.

The germination process of delphinium seeds requires specific professional expertise. Many larkspur varieties are cold germinators or react strongly to temperature fluctuations. Cold stratification or controlled propagation at temperatures between twelve and fifteen degrees Celsius is often necessary to achieve uniform germination. Because the seed can be light-sensitive, it is lightly covered after sowing with a fine layer of vermiculite or covered with foil to maintain stable moisture levels. After seedling emergence, a cool growing regime is essential to build a strong root system and prevent premature stretching of young plants.
