Petunia seeds for professional growing

Petunia has been a mainstay of international ornamental horticulture for decades. Thanks to continuous innovation in breeding, the range of shapes, colours and cultivation characteristics has grown enormously. For professional growers, selecting the right starting material is crucial to achieving a consistent, sellable crop. Our petunia seeds are characterised by high germination power and genetic purity, so you can rely on a predictable growing process and a healthy crop. As an expert wholesaler, Muller Seeds supports you not only with high-quality seeds but also with tailored cultivation advice to get the highest return from your crop.

Characteristics and cultivation classification of petunia

Within the petunia genus, we distinguish several types, each with unique characteristics for specific applications within commercial ornamental horticulture. The most common classifications are Grandiflora, Multiflora, Milliflora and the so-called spreading or wave types.

• Grandiflora types are known for their large, striking flowers and are highly suitable for sale in larger pots.
• Multiflora types produce smaller flowers in much greater numbers and are considerably more resistant to rain and wind, making them ideal for public green spaces and bedding schemes.
• Milliflora types are very compact plants with an abundance of small flowers, requiring little to no growth regulators during cultivation.
• Spreading and trailing types have a strongly creeping or hanging growth habit and are highly suitable for filling hanging baskets and large patio containers.

Germinating petunia seeds requires a controlled growing environment and precise climate control. The seed is very fine and needs light to germinate. It is therefore important not to cover the seed with a thick layer of substrate, but at most to press it lightly or cover it with a thin layer of coarse vermiculite for optimal moisture management. At a constant temperature of twenty-one to twenty-three degrees Celsius and high relative humidity, germination will take place within seven to fourteen days. After the seedlings emerge, it is essential to gradually lower the temperature and provide sufficient light to prevent the seedlings from stretching.
